The European Central Bank (ECB) is actively redesigning euro banknotes—the first complete redesign since their introduction in 2002.

On July 23, 2026, the ECB unveiled ten shortlisted design proposals based on two themes: “European culture” (featuring figures like Beethoven, Marie Curie, Leonardo da Vinci, etc., with related cultural scenes) and “Rivers and birds” (showing European birds and river landscapes, with EU institutions on the reverse). A public online survey is open until September 21, 2026, for feedback from Europeans.
