DAY 113 | Lukla

Tenzing-Hillary Airport (Lukla Airport)

My ex landed on this 527m-runway today and sent me a few pics and vids of the short flight from Kathmandu, the landing, and the airport.
Blew my socks off.
That's been naggin' at me all day and I'm still green with envy.

Touchdown

The airport is accessible only to helicopters and small STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) aircraft such as Pilatus planes.

The runway is 527 m long and 30 m wide, with an 11.7% gradient. The airport's elevation is 2,845 m (9,334 ft). It is used for transporting passengers and cargo to Lukla and other nearby villages, as there is no road to this region.

The airport has gained worldwide fame, firstly for its unusual location, but also because it was rated the most dangerous airport in the world for more than 20 years.

Lukla is popular because it is considered the starting point for treks towards Mount Everest Base Camp. There are daily flights between Ramechhap or Kathmandu and Lukla during daylight hours in good weather.
