France has delivered Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets to Ukraine

France on Thursday delivered a first consignment of Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets to Ukraine, without disclosing how many had been delivered.

Ukrainian pilots and mechanics have been trained in eastern France to use the jets, which have undergone extensive modifications including to combat Russian jamming. While the exact technical details of the retrofitting haven't been fully disclosed for security reasons, here's what I know:

• Modernized Avionics: The Mirage 2000-5 is already an upgraded version of the original Mirage 2000, featuring advanced avionics, enhanced firing capabilities, and a modern sensor and control system. This includes a high-quality radar and the ability to carry drop tanks for extended range.
  
  
• Ground Strike Capabilities: The jets have been equipped with ground strike capabilities, notably the ability to carry and launch SCALP/Storm Shadow long-range missiles and French AASM Hammer guided bombs. • Electronic Warfare Countermeasures: It's been reported that the jets have been modified to counter Russian electronic warfare tactics. This suggests upgrades to the aircraft's electronic warfare systems to protect it from jamming and other electronic threats.

These upgrades make the Mirage 2000-5 a versatile multirole fighter jet capable of air-to-air combat, ground attacks, and other missions.

FYI: The French-made Mirage III fighter jets were a key factor in Israel's victory in the Six-Day War. They were superior to the Arab forces' aircraft and were instrumental in destroying enemy aircraft in the air and on the ground. Israeli Mirage III fighters were flying more than twelve sorties a day. Since the aircraft appeared to be far superior to all others, the armies of Jordan, Egypt and Syria believed that the aircraft had been secretly developed and produced by the United States.

By the Yom Kippur War (1973), the Israeli Air Force was heavily reliant on American aircraft, including the F-4 Phantom II and A-4 Skyhawk, but the Mirage III and Nesher (Mirage 5) still played a decisive role in air combat. The conflict saw Israeli and Arab Mirages III clash, leading the Israelis to quickly paint orange triangles on the wings of their planes to allow their immediate identification and to avoid tragic confusion during aerial combat.
